start of summer tidbits Hello! Just giving a quick update on whats going on with my life and what Im doing this summer. Im doing this because a) I need to break my blogger drought (rip sophomore year) and b) Im working on a really big blog post but itll take some more time, and in the interim Ill be doing a lot of small, bite-size blog posts! So how was sophomore year? Hm. Academically, it was rough, for sure. Ill get more into it in a future blog post, but the classes were definitely the hardest theyve ever been, and Im sure theyll only get harder. :( But I got to spend that year in Next House, and in Sigma Phi Epsilon, and with Toons, and a lot of new people. And when I look at my experience last year overall it wasnt too bad. (More to come later.) What am I doing this summer? So you may have heard of x-terms, which is a new thing that is starting this fall. I was lucky enough to get an offer from a company called Everbridge to work for them in the fall as a part-time software engineering intern! I was really happy that I finally  had a job, and a chance acquire experience in industry. But I still had nothing going for me over the summer. I had a lot of backup plans: read, code, do my own projects, travel, just relax at home, study Japanese, etc. But luckily, again, I told the company that my summer was totally free and I could start in the summer as a full-time intern if possible, and they said sure. So here I am in Burlington, MA, peering down into a rabbit-hole of a codebase and getting a head-start on my x-term! :D Im living at a place called Couch House in Somerville this summer. Its a really nice place: its called couch house because the living room is literally just couches EVERYWHERE and theres pretty lighting and theres a TV and someone has all the Nintendo consoles and another person is raising LIVE CHICKENS in a REAL CHICKEN COOP in the backyard and getting FRESH EGGS from them?? Like?? I feel like I won the summer housing lottery. What other non-academic or non-work things do you want to do this summer? I picked up a beginner Magic: The Gathering deck last week because I wanted to learn how to play, and I have somehow gotten some of my 2East friends to start playing with me. Its a really fun card game! Its also a fairly expensive investment if you want to be competitive. Luckily for us, were fine with sticking to our beginner decks and learning the rules for now. :) I want to keep working on my Japanese, and I also have a lot of books I want to read: Slaughterhouse Five; Infinite Jest; Thinking, Fast and Slow. I want to actually go to the gym at a regular basis this summer because I havent really been able to do it during the school year. ;-; My coworker is literally a god, he has a huge container of whey on his desk and is Odin incarnate but hes also really kind and gave me a bunch of workout tips. Anything else? Balance patch in Boston is by far the best LAN cafe in the area, so if youre into video games, PC gaming, VR, etc. with a nice vibe and good food, I highly recommend! Im learning a lot about the agile methodology in software development (mainly because Im part of an agile scrum team at work): theres a lot of weird vocabulary that goes into it, like sprints and grooming and ceremonies and stories and velocity and so on. Its a really interesting way to approach workflow as a team! If youre into Course 6-y software engineering stuff, take a look at it! He was also know to many as Charles the Great or Just Charles in his inner circle. He single handedly battled to extend the area on all sides of his kingdom. Eventually he went from being King of the Franks to Emperor of the West. However, â€Å"According to this title, Charlemagne as not the Roman emperor crowned by the pope but rather God’s emperor, who governed the Roman Empire along with his many other duties. † 2 By the time Charlemagne had died, his Freakish Empire was as big as the Byzantine Empire. 3 Charlemagne was a lover of the Liberal Arts. He was never satisfied with his own language so he went on to learn several others, most of all Latin. He could understand Greek but he never learned to speak it well. In the Kings spare time he studied rhetoric, astronomy, and dialectics. It wasn’t until later in his life that he started to write in Journals documenting his wisdom and ideas about religion and owe the stars and the planets existed. In one of the most accomplished endeavors that Charlemagne took on, was the education of children. He was truly a visionary of his time. He himself was quite educated verbally and in reading but he never mastered the art of writing. He thought that every child should have a chance to go to school, even commoners. He felt with education that he could lead his people to eternal salvation. What better way to spread the word of God, and then teach it along side general education? In Charlemagne’s conquests there were several newly conquered lands and or people hat needed saving, so he took upon himself to build school and fill them with the most educated of educators. He vowed to have the teachers teach grammar, psalms, math, and reading. Charlemagne would offer free schooling to anyone ages six years and up that would offer there children to the Church, attaching them to the monastic life permanently. He would task the nuns and monks to educate these children with little or no down time. If the child successfully completed the first series of education they would then be allowed to continue in his educational program, which would include subjects such as, geometry, music, astronomy, and math. 4 The end result of Charlemagne’s school curriculum well surpassed anything he could have imagined. â€Å"It led too kind of literacy renaissance†. Scholars from all over Europe would come and teach different subject. These scholars from Italy, Spain, Ireland, and England influenced the regions culture not only raising questions about religion and social issues but they also influenced the way Charlemagne’s own children were being raised. Charlemagne married at his mother’s request the daughter of Desirous, the King of the Lombardi. However it is said she was sent away a year later because she could not have children. 6 He later took a Sabina woman as his partner and had four sons and five daughters. Charlemagne was unlike other rules with children. His autobiographer would often say that he bonded with his children, always making time for them. He would eat dinner with them, and he never would travel without them. They were educated Just as other children, first in the Liberal Arts, with emphasis in math and grammar and then on to the higher level, which included music and geometry. After a certain age the boys were taught how to ride horses ND carry a sword. The girls were taught how to work wool, so they would value hard work. 7 He never did marry off any of his daughters. It is speculated that he was too worried about having to give up land by the request of their suitors, so he never strove to marry them off. Each went on to have several illegitimate children. 8 One thing is for sure; Charlemagne was a visionary and a skilled warrior. He knew that education was the key and he also knew it should be available to anyone who wanted it. Willy Loman’s goal was a quite common one, to live the perfect life, commonly known as â€Å"The American Dream.† The difference between him and everyone else is that his dream became an obsession. Having gown up without a father, caused him to want nothing but the best for his own family but his flawed ways to achieve this goal ended up ruining his life and the lives of those around him, specifically his eldest son Biff. Willy Loman was a victim of this mentality. The phrase was first coined in 1931 in James Truslow Adams novel, The Epic of America. In his book, Adams stated that the definition of this exemplar was, â€Å"the dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.† A character that exemplifies this statement on a positive note was Willy’s friend and neighbor Charley, who was able to provide for his family and set his child on a path to success. Whereas Willy was so consumed by the idea of achieving that goal, he chose failure as opposed to giving up the dream. The trick was not to let it consume you, but some people, like Willy, were too caught up in the dream to face reality. The one memory from Willy Loman’s childhood that continues to linger until his death, is how his father deserted him at the tender age of three years and eleven months. While Willy is â€Å"talking† to his brother Ben, he frantically brings up the whereabouts of their father, â€Å"Where is Dad? Didn’t you follow him? How did you get started?† (Miller 47). The order in which Willy asks the questions pertains to how Ben came about his fortune. The second question implies that Willy assumed that Ben followed their father after he left for Alaska and in doing so, became successful. Willy made the assumption that Ben was so triumphant because he knew their father better and through him he acquired information that Willy will never know. â€Å"Dad left when I was such a baby and I never had a chance to talk to him and I still feel – kind of temporary about myself† (Miller 51). Willy believed the reason for Ben’s success was he had guidance from both parents. He felt that his own lackluster life was due to the fact that his father left him at such a young age. One specific example that can be sited is how Willy speculated that his father could have instilled some confidence had he been around. Through these assumptions made by Willy, the audience begins to see how his insecurities about not having a father effected how he raised his children. Since being a good father to his children was so important to Willy because his father was not there for him, Willy decided that he would put all of his efforts into making his boys lives’ as great as they could possibly be. Willy did not want them to ever feel insecure about who they were, so he wanted to be there every step of the way to guide them onto the right path. Yet in doing so, they became inadequate on making their own decisions. â€Å"I never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air I could never stand taking orders from anybody† (Miller 131). Since Biff received the majority of Willy’s attention, he was sheltered the most. Nothing he ever did was considered wrong and even the most dire situations could be fixed with a simple talk. Like most wives during this period, Linda was loyal to Willy all the way to the bitter end. Not once would she outright tell him something he did was wrong, but if she did, she eased it upon him. The most depressing part is, since Willy focused all of his attention on Biff, Happy basically traveled the same road his father resented so much. He exhibits the same traits as Willy even though there is an age difference. For example, Willy does not voice and actual detestation toward his father for le aving him at such a young age. He would have loved, even now, to just sit down and have a talk with him. Whenever a fight breaks out between Willy and Biff, Happy always sides with his father because for some strange reason he still looks up to him. Similarly, Happy is making money and is able to pay his rent, but he still is not content with the way his life has turned out. All in all, one man’s unattainable goal and the support of a loyal family brought down not only Willy’s life, undoubtedly it caused all of theirs to spin out of control as well. The difference between this and many other plays written about the period, was that it focused on one aspect that related to the idealism from â€Å"The American Dream†. Never before had a play addressed such a small aspect of the 1940s idealism, the want for a complete family. Essentially, this play really illustrated the chain of events that can occur under certain events and mentalities. It also dealt with the idea that too much of anything is not good for you. Too much positive encouragement will not allow any room for improvement, and if someone cannot learn to tackle their flaws, then they are inevitably flawed as is.
